Sustainability

Flik, who manages the Academy’s dining program, has numerous initiatives underway relating to sustainability.

  • Dining Services launched a sustainable seafood program that shifts seafood purchases away from threatened fish species and toward sustainable sourced supplies to supports the health of our oceans. More information can be found at the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch website - www.seafoodwatch.org.
  • Milton Academy’s Dining Service is now 100% trans-fat free (higher then federal standard).
  • An estimated 15-20% of all Academy produce comes from local or regional farms, a remarkable achievement considering Milton primarily operates during the winter months.
  • Flik uses only cage-free eggs.

In addition to the above programs, in 2007, Milton completed renovations of the Forbes Kitchen (Dining Services main cooking kitchen). This kitchen is far more energy and resource efficient than the previous kitchen. These efficiencies include: dish machines that use much less water and fewer chemicals than the previous machines, HVAC systems that are more energy efficient (resulting in increase energy savings and reducing the need for independent heat and air conditioning), a light management automation system, and numerous other environmentally friendly initiatives.

Members of Dining Services are participate on Milton Academy's Sustainability Committee, which helps guide environmental, and social responsibility within the school community

Recycling at Milton

All members of the community are encouraged and expected to participate in the school’s Recycling Program.  The goal of the recycling program is to reduce the volume of trash generated by the school and ultimately to conserve resources.  To this end the community is also encouraged to reduce usage of disposable products and to reuse as much as possible.  Efforts to reduce consumption of resources in general, such as water and electricity are encouraged.

The Recycling Program includes the following materials:

All paper products (recycled in BLUE receptacles). Includes: white/colored paper (staples and small paper clips are okay), newspaper, phone books, junk mail, catalogues, construction paper (crayoned, painted, pasted is okay), file folders (without metal hanging rod), notebooks (without spiral binder), paperboard (such as cereal boxes).  Not included: waxed paper or waxed cartons, carbon paper, Mylar, tyvek, food soiled paper, hardcover books, metal/plastic bindings.

All “Commingle Recycling” (recycled in GREEN receptacles).  Includes beverage containers (bottles & cans) and other glass, tin and any ‘recycle-labeled’ plastics such as ‘smothie cups’, food packaging, plastic coffee cups and plates (wiped clean), toiletries or food containers (rinsed).
Not included: any food or trash.

Corrugated Cardboard: flattened and placed behind or next to any recycling receptacle.  Includes pizza boxes that have not absorbed grease and have been emptied of all pizza scraps and paper liner.

Other: Year end clothing and used book collection, Christmas Tree composting, a food composting program on East Campus, Toner Cartridge Recycling through ATS Department collected in the copy center, and State mandated recycling of Florescent Light Bulbs, Batteries and Ballast by Facilities Department.
