Allergy Awareness
As each academic year passes there seems to be more and
more emphasis on Allergy Awareness in our schools.
Allergies can range from minor in nature to extremely
severe and can even lead to death. There are allergies to any food you
can think of.
So the question becomes "what can we do about it"? For
starters, we can start the process of educating our children at the
earliest age possible, as early as preschool.
Firsthand accounts demonstrate that children as young as 4 years old,
when taught properly, can be sensitive and aware of other children with
allergies. Like all learned behavior allergy awareness must be
continually stressed with our young children.
FLIK Independent Schools proclaims to be "Nut Aware"
meaning Flik will not intentionally add nuts or nut products to recipes
without proper notification in the way of menu signage. With the
exception of Peanut Butter, nuts have been removed from all our dining
hall menus. With so many products available to us it is nearly
impossible to guarantee items to be "Nut Free" as there can be
hidden traces of various nuts or nut oils in many products. Research
indicates
that there are traces of nut oils in chocolate milk, but very seldom is
it listed. Additional research demonstrates that nut oils can be
stubborn to the point of not completely washing away in a commercial
dish cleaning machine. After several cycles in a dish machine, cookie
pans can still contain traces of nut oils which are strong enough to
trigger a reaction to a person with sensitive allergies. FLIK annually
trains all employees on allergy awareness. Managers constantly
reinforce the training and keep all aware about cross-contamination. We
work closely with our purveyors and inspect all labels on new food
items.
If you are ever in doubt of any item being served,
please ask to speek to the Chef.
